Ojoche is a small mountain village situated on the border with Honduras. Ojoche is home to around 300 people who work together to make a clean, prosperous community. Though by most American standards the people are poor and lead simple lives, Ojoche is teeming with talented artisans, hard workers, and religious leaders.
The artisans of Ojoche are talented not only because they can create beautiful items, but because they must source their materials and work with very basic equipment. These factors make the quality and complexity of their crafts even more impressive. However, these artisans have trouble selling all they create, for there is little market in Ojoche. Look in our Store to see what the artisans of Ojoche are able to make.
Traditional government in Ojoche is forsaken for hardworking church leaders combined with very educated and skilled professionals. Together, they form the Ojoche Council and govern the small city as efficiently as any standardized government.
Run4Water first surveyed Ojoche for water needs in 2013 and found that their water is mostly clean and accessible. However, there is plenty of work to be done in Ojoche. Currently, Run4Water is working with the community to build and stock a fully functional pharmacy and a leather working ministry. The pharmacy will provide an affordable way to receive medication and medical aid. The pharmacy will also have beds and a bathroom for the members of the community to use when ill or waiting to be transported to the hospital. The leather ministry is a way for the local women to make an income for their family and their community. They cut and stitch the leather to create bracelets and journals. The goods are then sold locally and at the Run4Water store. All proceeds of the leather good sold from the Run4Water store go directly back in to the community of Ojoche.
